Competition (DVD)

Since 1976, Honolulu's Kalihi-Palama Culture and Arts Society has preserved the legacy of Queen Lili`uokalani through the Keiki Hula Competition. Each year, the most talented and promising keiki (children) compete in this three-day festival in honor of Hawai`i's last monarch. Perpetuating her legacy and love for music and hula, this competition showcases the grace, excitement, talent, and passion of individual keiki and their halau (schools). These keiki honor the traditions of the past, while ensuring the preservation of the culture for future generations to come.

Televised by KITV 4, the 33rd annual festival features talented halau and individual performances. These skillful keiki kane (boys) and kaikamahine (girls) celebrate their love for the hula through graceful, contemporary `auana, and traditional, passionate kahiko.

With each dancer, each movement, witness the future of the hula, which, thanks to the love and care of Hawai`i's Queen, is bright and hopeful for all our keiki.

Approximate Running Time: 4 hours.
