From the press release for "Maka":
"[O'Brian] Eselu began his career as a comic hula dancer with a local luau show followed by a
career as an accomplished musician regularly singing as part of a Hawaiian trio.
Later, he was chosen by a kupuna to learn the art of hula in the traditional
Hawaiian way. Today, Eselu is recognized as one of Hawai'i's
foremost kumu hula, winning many awards for his 'bombastic' style of hula
at the Merrie Monarch Competition each year.
Eselu takes to the stage whether as a kumu hula with
his powerful style or as a dazzling entertainer who lights up the stage with his
smile and gracious demeanor. After launching his singing career with his album, 'Ke Kumu,'
Eselu won the 1998 Na Hoku Hanohano's Most Promising Artist."
