Every year, on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday after Easter, the sleepy town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai`i is transformed into the Hula Capitol of the World. For three sold-out nights, the prestigious Merrie Monarch Hula Competition is held at Hilo's Edith Kanaka`ole Stadium, spotlighting the best and brightest hula halau from across the Island chain as well as the Mainland United States. KITV4, a local television station, has been telecasting the event since the early eighties. Each summer KITV releases a highlight video featuring the top-placing halau in each category. Our new, expanded descriptions include the highlighted halau and, where available, the titles of their performances. The use of different hula implements by the halau are also noted, as well as links to pages on our site featuring those implements.
