& Kamokila

"The original Kamokila, for whom our Kamokila was named, was a demi-goddess of ancient Hawai`i. It has been written that she possessed many strange powers which were to be guarded in great secrecy and used with utmost discretion.

Kamokila Campbell was a total individual who drew her energy and strength from the earth and seas of Hawai`i. Her great wisdom was Hawaiian, and she was constantly in tune with the vibrations of her islands and beliefs in the old Hawaiian Gods.

Kamokila's love of music and legends of Hawai`i is what brought us together. It was a warm, understanding friendship that was to last 24 years. We first met in 1947 but it was not until 1956 that the first three legends of this collection began to take shape.

I composed the music for the first three legends at Lanikuhonua, Kamokila's estate at Ewa.

The decision was then made to record the Legends. In Kamokila's words, 'in the hope they will bring to the world more knowledge and understanding of the many hidden treasures in this paradise nestled in the arms of Aloha.'

Now, because of the awakened awareness of the significance and sense of Polynesian Mythology, it is the proper time to re-release the complete set of Legends of Hawai`i in one collection. It is the proper time to share the brilliant mastery of Polynesian lore and love of legendary Hawai`i as seen through the heart of Kamokila, one of Hawai`i's most gentle noblewomen."
