  
The foundation of Halau o Kekuhi is on the island of Hawai`i in the disctrict of Hilo. The kumu hula are Nalani Kanaka`ole and Pualani Kanaka`ole Kanahele, daughters of renowned composer, teacher and kumu hula, Aunty Edith Kanaka`ole. The rank of kumu hula for this halau is passed to the next generation after the preceeding generation has died. Halau o Kekuhi can account for seven generations.
The halau is celebrated for its mastery of the `aiha`a style of hula and many different styles of oli. Halau o Kekuhi has been invited to travel extensively, performing throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Europe, Asia and Russia. In September 1993, Halau o Kekuhi earned the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
