In 1972, Gabby Pahinui reemerged into popularity with his sons and friends to forge a sound in Hawaiian music that was rural, spontaneous, emotional and rich in spirit. The foundation for the “Waimanalo Sound” was Gabby’s 12-string guitar and uniquely expressive voice, with Pahinui sons Bla, Cyril, Martin and Phil. Rounding out the band were friends Atta Isaacs, Sonny Chillingworth, Joe Kupahu, Randy Lorenzo, and later Ry Cooder. Listening to these modern classics, you will understand why the inspired music of the Gabby Band is close to the heart of modern Hawai`i’s cultural renaissance.
