Aunty Edith Kanaka`ole

Aunty Edith Ke-Kuhi-Kuhi-I-Pu-u-One`o- Na-Ali`i-o-Kohala Kenoa Kanaka`ole (1913-1979) began her hula training as a child under her mother, Mary Ahi`ena Kekuewa of Puna. From an early age she was taught to regard the oli (chant) over the dance, and in her teachings often stressed the importance of fluency in the Hawaiian language for understanding the kaona (hidden meaning) in each chant. She said," The oli can exist without the hula, but the hula cannot exist without the oli in the classical forms of these arts."

For years she taught Hawaiian language, first at Hawai`i Community College and from 1973 through 1979 at Hilo College. She was named Hawaiian of the Year in 1977 by the State Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, and in 1979 was presented with the Governor's Award of Distinction for Cultural Leadership, by the State Council on Hawaiian Heritage and the State Foundation on Culture and Arts.

Since her passing, her daughters Pualani Kanaka`ole Kanahele and Nalani Kanaka`ole have continued her teaching in Halau O Kekuhi.
